First you need to figure out if the hair loss you are experiencing is excessive. It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day but when it reaches the 150+ range per day it is considered excessive. Of course if the thinning hair is visually obvious then the next step is to determine if the hair loss is due to heredity and not just a temporary issue or due to a medical illness, etc since hair loss can be caused by a number of reasons. Once it is determined that the hair loss is hereditary, then you may want to consider using the following products: Minoxidil is the 1st product approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. You may know it as Rogaine, but it is generically known as minoxidil which is the active ingredient. The product can be purchased over the counter and applied directly on the scalp twice per day, once in the morning and once at night. The 2nd product is called Propecia which is the 2nd product approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. It is a prescription pill which is taken once per day. It is a little more costly than minoxidil and requires a prescription so you may want to start with minoxidil. There are also other products but I would start off using one of these two mentioned. If minoxidil doesn't work for you then you may want to try Propecia. But give the products a chance before giving up. It may take up to 4 months to see results so dont just use the product for a week or even a month and then stop thinking it is not working for you. Also, you may begin stacking the products which means to start taking more than one hair loss product at one time. For example, many hair loss sufferers use the Big Three Regimen which is taking minoxidil, propecia, and nizoral shampoo at the same time to combat hair loss. Start off with one and see how it works for you. After a while and you determine it doesnt work then start using another product. If you can afford it you may consider using multiple products at once as I discussed. But remember, you must continue using the products to continue seeing results as once you stop taking the products the hair loss process will start up again.
